WAYNE COUNTY & THE ELECTRIC CHAIRS
are VERY out of place in the mudpen that is this year's Reading Rock Festival, and definitely ain't what the long haired, gritty audience are used to. The "Chairs" had their on-stage sound sabotaged by the hippie soundmen, who misguidedly thought that the band were fascists. When they launch into their third number, "If You Don't Wanna Fuck Me baby baby Fuck-Off', they are taken quite literally and retreat the stage under a hail of beer cans, rocks and mud. Eventually, this onslaught took out the drum kit, mikes, and amps. J.J. responded by throwing the mud bombs back ,and the whole thing descended into an hilarious mud fight between the audience and the band, leaving the stage a foot deep in mud. So, shovels and yard brushes and not guitars were the order of the day. Despite this, it still remains one of J.J.'s all time favourite gigs. However Wayne County vows to never play at a festival again.
MAGAZINE is the new band that Howard Devoto has finally assembled since he left the Buzzcocks. He had said he felt tired of shouting vocals and wanted something more intelligent to sing. After posting adverts for musicians at the Manchester Virgin Records center a band is built. There are rumors about that he's setting Kafka to music. The band will make it's debut soon. Members of the group are Howard Devoto on vocals and guitar, John McGeoch on guitar and sax, Barry Adamson on bass, Martin Jackson on drums and Bob Dickinson on keyboards.
